Exceptional Children (EC) Services
Sterling Montessori follows the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and North Carolina Article 9 to provide a free and appropriate public education for students with disabilities. Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) are developed in collaboration with families to support each child in the least restrictive environment.

Project Child Find
In compliance with federal and state mandates, Sterling identifies, locates, and evaluates children who may need special education services—at no cost to families.
Transitions and Discipline
Sterling welcomes students with IEPs from both in-state and out-of-state schools. Services begin immediately upon enrollment.
Behavioral support follows a Pyramid of Intervention, emphasizing positive, empathetic guidance and teamwork between families, staff, and specialists.
Dispute Resolution
Families and schools work collaboratively to meet student needs. If disagreements arise, facilitation or mediation can be requested through the NC Department of Public Instruction.
Additional EC Resources:
Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)
All Sterling students are part of a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), which provides academic and behavioral help based on each child’s needs.
Support may include classroom strategies, small-group instruction, or one-on-one intervention.
Lead teachers and assistants provide core instruction as well as supplemental support. While our school interventionist provides intensive intervention support to those students in need.
Specialist Support Services
Math Specialist
Our Math Specialist helps students build a strong foundation in mathematical thinking, flexibility, and creativity—essential Montessori values. Support may include individualized lessons, small-group sessions, or in-class assistance, as well as guidance for teachers and families on best practices.
Reading Specialist
Reading intervention begins early and adapts through each level:
- Lower Elementary: Phonics, decoding, and comprehension with multi-sensory materials
- Upper Elementary: Expanding vocabulary, context skills, and reading confidence
- Middle School: Building fluency, analysis, and a lifelong love of reading
School Counseling
Sterling’s counseling program nurtures students’ academic, social, and emotional growth through individual meetings, small-group work, and classroom lessons.
We focus on self-awareness, regulation, healthy relationships, and executive functioning skills. When needed, we help families connect with outside mental-health and community resources.
McKinney-Vento Program
The McKinney-Vento Act ensures educational access for children and youth experiencing homelessness. Eligible students—those living in temporary housing, doubling up, motels/hotels,, shelters, or other unstable conditions—have the right to enroll, attend, and succeed in school without barriers.
Sterling provides:
- Immediate school enrollment and transportation support
